Is a furnace replacement the right choice?

No one wishes to invest in a new furnace until their old one stops working, but there are several reasons why you might want to replace your furnace before it bites the dust. Here are a few reasons to buy a new furnace or replace the furnace you currently own:

Lower energy bills

Older furnaces are much less efficient than newer models, so you could be spending more money on energy bills than you need to. If your furnace is on its last leg, it might be time to invest in a new one before it completely breaks down.

Improved air quality

New furnaces come with built-in filters that improve the quality of air in your home. If allergies, asthma, or other respiratory problems are a concern, a new furnace can make breathing easier. Consider upgrading if air quality is a concern.

Quieter operation

Older furnaces are quite loud when running, but newer models are designed for much quieter operation. This can be a big selling point, especially for commercial applications or if your furnace is located near the living areas of your home.

Choose from the different types of furnaces

Understanding the different types of furnaces is critical when you are in the market for a new furnace. The four most common types of furnaces are single-stage, two-stage, modulating or multi-stage, and variable-stage.

single stage furnace in North York

Single-Stage Motor

This type of furnace has only two settings; on and off. The furnace is either working at full capacity or turned off. When the thermostat calls for heat, the furnace turns on and runs at full capacity until the desired room temperature is reached. Once the temperature is satisfied, the furnace turns off.

This option is the most affordable but can be less energy efficient because it is either working at full capacity or not at all. If your home is drafty, you may notice more temperature fluctuations with a single-stage furnace.

two-stage furnace in North York ontario

Two-Stage Motor

The ‘ON’ setting of a dual-stage furnace has two settings for heating; low capacity and high capacity. Low capacity is about 60-70% of the furnace’s full heating ability, while high capacity is 100%. This option is quieter and generates more consistent and evenly distributed heat than a single-stage furnace.

It is responsive to rapid weather changes resulting in fewer drastic temperature swings in your home. They are less disruptive since they don’t switch on and off as often as a single-stage furnace. Dual-stage furnaces are more expensive than single-stage models but offer better energy efficiency.

Modulating/Multi-Stage Motor

A modulating furnace can make very small adjustments to heating capacity. Instead of having two settings like a dual-stage furnace, a modulating furnace can operate at any level between 40% and 100% capacity and increase at 5 to 10% intervals. This gives the furnace a much wider range of heating options.

They run continuously at low settings when the temperature outside is mild, which conserves energy and provides consistent heating. When the temperature outside drops, the furnace will ramp up to higher settings to maintain the desired room temperature. Modulating furnaces are energy efficient and also expensive.

Variable Stage Motor

A variable-speed furnace has a blower (ECM motor) that operates at different speeds depending on the heating demand. This furnace is quiet and efficient because the motor only uses the energy needed to maintain the desired room temperature.

The furnace will operate at a low speed when the temperature is mild and ramp up to higher speeds as the temperature outside drops. Because the blower runs continuously, the air in your home is circulated more often, which results in better indoor air quality and evenly distributed heat.

Variable-speed furnaces are more expensive than other types of furnaces but offer the best energy efficiency. They also come with built-in humidity control, which can be beneficial if you live in an area with high humidity levels.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heating

If you don’t see your question or answer here, please don’t hesitate to call us. We’re happy to help and committed to making your furnace purchase the easiest decision you’ve ever made.

The cost of a new furnace can vary based on several factors, such as the type and size of the unit, installation costs, and any special features or accessories that you may want. However, in general, you can expect to pay between $1,200 and $5,500 for a home furnace. Commercial units can be much more expensive.

While many variables can affect the lifespan of a furnace, most units will last between 15 and 20 years. Of course, regular maintenance can help to extend the life of your furnace. Failure to keep up with regular maintenance can result in a shorter lifespan.

Some furnace models come with a DIY installation kit. However, we do not recommend attempting to install your furnace on your own. Furnace installation is a complex process that should only be attempted by trained professionals. Improper installation can result in serious safety hazards and damage to your home.

  • A furnace works by heating air and circulating it throughout your home using a system of ducts.
  • The air is drawn into the unit through a return duct, where it is then heated by a gas burner or an electric element. The now-warm air is then circulated back into your home through a system of supply ducts.
  • The furnace uses either natural gas, oil, or electricity to heat the air.
  • A pilot light ignites the fuel source, and a blower then pushes the heated air through the ductwork.
  • The thermostat controls the furnace, turning it on and off as needed to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home.

The size of the furnace you need will depend on several factors, such as the square footage of your home, how many doors and windows you have, the climate you live in, and your family’s heating needs. We usually recommend that you consult a professional to help you determine the best size for your home to ensure that your furnace can effectively heat your entire home. This is why we do a complete in-home assessment before every furnace installation in North York.
